Nanotechnology in Textiles Webinar

Nanotechnology has practical and commercial applications in textiles particularly in the area of functional finishing and defense. This presentation will provide an overview of the field and discuss new applications that have evolved in connection with developing fibers, performance clothing and protective textiles. The environment and health impacts of nanotechnology and science will also be examined. It is important for the textile and fiber industry to understand the health and environmental aspects of nanoscience and technology as it may influence future products in the market place.

Dr. Seshadri Ramkumar is currently an Associate Professor of Technical Textiles at Texas Tech University. His research focuses on developing value-added materials using nonwovens and nano technologies. He directs the Nonwoven and Advanced Materials Laboratory at Texas Tech University. He currently holds three US patents. One of his inventions, “Fibertect” has been commercialized and is recommended as a component of next-generation, “Low-cost Personal Decontamination System (LPDS).” He serves on the editorial boards of many international peer-reviewed journals including Journal of Engineered Fibers & Fabrics and AATCC Review. He is the co-chairman of INDA’s India Committee and has played an important role in linking the Indian and US technical textiles industry. He has been awarded Honorary Fellowship of the Textile Association (India) and has received the Chancellor’s Distinguished Research Award, highest research award given at Texas Tech University.

Dr. Ramkumar is an active member of AATCC where he is the chair of the Materials Interest Group and on its Board of Directors. He is a frequent presenter at the AATCC International Conference and other Association programs.
