Fabrics containing spandex elastomeric fibers are increasingly popular is all types of apparel. This webinar will include the properties of spandex, typical wet processing routes, and processing issues such as preparation, dyeing, and finishing. Included in the webinar will be comments on dye selection and color fastness as related to many of the spandex blends with polyester, nylon, cotton, and other fibers.

Nelson E. Houser is Vice-President of Technical Services for M. Dohmen USA. A 1967 graduate of the College of Textiles NC State University with a B.S. in Textile Chemistry, he has served in various technical and management positions with dyestuff and chemical suppliers, and wet processors.

Previous associations include V.P. of Technical Marketing for Burlington Chemical Co., Technical Director with the Textile Products Division of Ciba-Geigy Corp. and Technical Manager with American Color and Chemical. Manufacturing experiences include management and technical positions with Burlington Industries Galey and Lord Division (yarn dyeing), and Beaunit Corp. (yarn dyeing and beam dyeing of warp knits).

Nelson has been an active member of AATCC for over 40 years, chaired several technical committees including Colorfastness to Perspiration and the Education Advisory Board, served as President of the Association in 1997 and 1998, and prior member of the Board of Directors. In 2003, Nelson was awarded the AATCC’s Harold C. Chapin Award for distinguished service to the Association.

Nelson also works with technology transfer programs at the College of Textiles at NCSU and presently is on the Board of Directors for HueMetrix, a monitoring technology for textile dyeing.

Additional recognitions include the Textile Leader of the Year by the Kappa Tau Beta Leadership Fraternity and Phi Psi Professional Textile Fraternity at the College of Textiles at NCSU, and the 2001 Textile World Annual Top 10 for service and dedication to the textile industry.

A frequent speaker on textile wet processing, Nelson has made numerous presentations at AATCC workshops and symposia, NC State and Clemson University programs, and various trade association programs.
