• A Review: Polyvinyl Alcohol Warp Sizes by James E. Moreland (Textile Chemist & Colorist, April 1980). There are many different types of PVA, the types differing in degree of hydrolysis and molecular weight.
• An Improvement in Effluent Disposal with Emphasis on Cotton Pretreatment Processes by K. M. Cheng (Textile Chemist & Colorist, March 1998). Experimental work targeted desizing and bleaching process improvements and chemical substitutions to determine if changes maintained effects while becoming more environmentally benign.
• Biodegradation of Synthetic Warp Sizes by Carl E. Bryan and Peggy S. Harrison (Textile Chemist & Colorist, June 1973). Studies with laboratory activated sludge units indicate that acclimatized sludges developed from sewage micro-organisms effect a high degree of removal of PVA and CMC from influents containing these materials.
• Comparison of Alkaline Scouring of Cotton vs. Alkaline Pectinase Preparation by Pervin Anis and Hüseyin Aksel Eren (AATCC Review, December 2002). Enzymatic scouring of cotton with cellulase and alkaline pectinase enzymes as well as process combinations have been investigated.
• Cotton Hosiery Bleaching with Hydrogen Peroxide by Bruce A. Evans, Leanne Boleslawski, and John E. Boliek (Textile Chemist & Colorist, March 1997). Hydrogen peroxide bleaching of cotton hosiery offers a response to environmental concerns about the use of sodium hypochlorite.
• Cotton Preparation with Alkaline Pectinase: An Environmental Advance by J. N. Etters (Textile Chemist and Colorist & American Dyestuff Reporter, November 1999). The replacement of sodium hydroxide by alkaline pectinase in cotton preparation has the potential to revolutionize wet processing.
• Dancing on a High Wire: Preparation in the Early 21st Century by Maria C. Thiry (AATCC Review, August 2001). The importance of proper preparation brings pressure to bear on decisions made on the tension between the demands of quality, cost efficiency, and environmental concerns.
