• Safety and Health Testing by Joseph McLaughlin Jr. (Textile Chemist & Colorist, June 1980). Since passage of the Toxic Substances Control Act, new relationships are evolving between the various federal governmental agencies involved in implementing and enforcing its requirements.
• Strategies for Determining Arsenic Residues in Cotton and Cotton Waste by Henry H. Perkins Jr. and D. E. Brushwood (Textile Chemist & Colorist, May 1993). A shortened extraction procedure and analytical method are described that mimic the complex EPA Toxic Characteristics Leaching Procedure.
• Textiles and the Environment from AATCC by Mary Elizabeth Gale and Martin Bide (Textile Chemist and Colorist & American Dyestuff Reporter, August 2000). Most of the measures that the EPA will use in self assessment involve checking whether the agency has completed certain tasks, such as developing a model to assess wildlife exposure to pollutants, rather than changes in pollution levels, human health, and the environment.
• The Impact of Environmental Regulations on the Pigments Industry Worldwide by Hugh M. Smith (Textile Chemist & Colorist, October 1991). The author reviews the major federal and state regulations impacting pigments in the US and looks at differences between US and European and Japanese environmental laws.
• The Resource Conservation and Recovery Act by Dean A. Bixler (Textile Chemist & Colorist, June 1979). EPA’s proposed set of rules and regulations under RCRA for the control of hazardous wastes just may put the textile industry into a new and expensive ballgame.
• The Toxic Substances Control Act in 1980 by John B. Ritch Jr. (Textile Chemist & Colorist, June 1980). Although some major steps have been taken in the implementation of the Toxic Substances Control Act since it was passed in 1976, the main impact of reporting, testing and controlling are just beginning to emerge.
