The Chapin Award was established in 1958 in honor of Harold C. Chapin, professor of chemistry at Lowell Textile School, who served as national secretary of AATCC for nearly 25 years. Chapin was a contemporary of Louis Atwell Olney, founder and first president of AATCC, who was head of the chemistry department at Lowell Textile when AATCC was organized in 1921.

AATCC has named Richard Stephen (Steve) Simonson the 2009 recipient of the Harold C. Chapin Award.

Steve Simonson is the 50th recipient of the Chapin Award. The first award was to Chapin in 1959. Those who have received the award since are:
