Discussion and comparison of two drying rate test methods, AATCC TM200 Drying Rate of Textiles at their Absorbent Capacity: Air Flow Method and AATCC TM201 Drying Rate of Fabric: Heated Plate Method. Discussion will focus on an overview of both methods, differences in use, data interpretation, and a hands-on demonstration with an AATCC TM200 device.

The test methods that are used to determine true “breathability,” what they mean, and how they relate to human thermal comfort. Most relevant tests associated with this property are fabric insulation, evaporative resistance, moisture vapor transmission rate and air permeability. Discussion includes sweating guarded hot plate and thermal manikin apparatus.

An explanation and demonstration of the test procedure including; apparatus overview, sample preparation, test procedure, and process troubleshooting. Also, discussion of best applications and potential limitations of the procedure.

1:15 PM Moisture Management: Customized versus Standard Testing to Support Product Development and Claims – Haskell Beckham, Exponent
A number of standard tests exist to characterize moisture management properties. However, the standard tests may not always provide the kind of product differentiation or insight required to allow certain claims to be written or support product development activities. After a brief review of some fundamental aspects of the standard tests for moisture management, some customized tests will be described and examples given for how the results from such tests may be used.
